This includes:

  • providing free and frank advice to the Prime Minister on constitutional issues
  • providing policy advice to the Prime Minister and Cabinet on a wide range of complex issues and supporting the operation of Cabinet and Cabinet Committees 
  • ensuring advice across agencies and entities is coherent and takes account of all relevant viewpoints
  • coordinating emergency management responses in a major disaster
  • dealing with national security threats and advising on cyber security
  • leading and coordinating central government’s role on the regeneration of Christchurch
  • managing public sector performance, alongside SSC and the Treasury
  • providing support services for the Governor-General
