Media statement - New Director of Civil Defence announced

I am delighted to announce the appointment of Sarah Stuart-Black as the new Director at the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM).

Sarah has been with MCDEM since 2003 and has been the Acting Director since John Hamilton’s recent retirement.

Sarah has a thorough understanding of the New Zealand crisis management arrangements and national security system and has strong operational experience both in New Zealand and overseas. She has also been a member of the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination Team for the past nine years.

Sarah has a Bachelor of Science in Development and Health in Disaster Management with Honours and a Masters by Research in Disaster Management.  She is a registered comprehensive nurse by training.

Since April 2014, MCDEM has been a business unit within the Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet.
